OUR PROGRAMS

Since 1994, the Dalit Welfare Organization has been delivering social, cultural, educational, economical and political empowerment as well as rights awareness projects in all corners of Nepal. DWO has offices (chapters) in 53 of Nepal's 75 administrative districts and, among these, more than 20 have national and internationally funded projects, while others have launched and run needs based and Dalit Human Rights based programs in association with local government.

With a staff of more than 120 committed and expert staff across the country, DWO's programmatic focus is primarily rights based advocacy, economic empowerment and education and, for several years, it has partnered in programs that address the specific needs of conflict affected communities, particularly children.

Advocacy:
Child Club Members presenting street drama on the rights of children in Bardiya District. DWO has a well developed advocacy capacity and has been effectively using electronic as well as print media to raise the voice of Dalits. It has also been advocating at different forums to raise the issue at local as well as national and international levels. DWO is the first social Organization to run awareness programs through national media (Radio and Television) and these programs continue today in partnership with the Lutheran World Federation, Action Aid Nepal, Save the Children Nepal and MS Nepal. Supporting its advocacy programs DWO has its own radio and TV studios in Kathmandu and an FM station will soon be broadcasting from Banke in Mid West Nepal.

DWO leverages its media and advocacy expertise to realize its vision of "a justifiable society by eliminating Caste Based Discrimination in Nepal". To achieve this vision it has not only raised awareness in the Dalit Community but also the non-Dalit society. The different means used for the purpose are; Lobbying, Campaigning, Cultural Programs, Street Dramas, Tele films, Radio and Television Program and policy influencing programs. Not only this, DWO has also been closely working with governments agencies to make the policies in favor of Dalits.
Education:
Children in local school classroom, supported by the education project in Bardiya district. DWO has realized that education is one of the major factors contributing to the lack of social, economic and political development in the Dalit Community. And so it is a very important priority. Since its establishment, DWO has managed huge education programs in Banke, Bardiya and Surkhet districts among conflict affected children with the support of Save the Children Norway and the International Rescue Committee. We not only worked with children but we have also worked with adults, particularly women, to make them literate by running adult literacy classes - for example through the Legal Literacy program in Dang in partnership with Danida Hugou.. Recently, we have launched an education project in ten V.D.Cs of Dang district among "never been to school children" in partnership with the Swiss Academy for Development and with the objective to fast track 900 out of school children into mainstream education.
Economic Empowerment:
Children in local school classroom, supported by the education project in Bardiya district. Economy has always been a very important part of human development and disadvantage. Since the majority of Nepali Dalits are economically deprived they do not have access to the nutritious food, health facility and education. To address this problem DWO has been running many economic empowerment projects all over the country. Recently we have launched very large economic empowerment projects in Kapilbastu, Nawalparasi, Kailali, Banke, Achham, Doti, Dailekh, Jajarkot, Jumla, Sindhuli, Rupandhi and Surkhet districts and in partnership with Practical Action, the Poverty Alleviation Fund, The Asia Foundation and USC Nepal. This has dramatically changed the life style of the local people. Now, people in this area have not only sent their children to the school but also bought some land with the earnings.
