Project title

Improving Livelihood Security of Socially Excluded Community in Nepal (ILLISSCON)

Purpose

To improve land limitation and give food insecure families access to productive resources, especially cultivable land. To provide knowledge, technical and financial support to food insecure families with which they can have sufficient amount and diversity of food.

About Project

The project was funded by European commission and jointly implemented by Dalit welfare Organization, Practical Action Nepal and LI-BIRD. 1233 House holds were directly benefited by the project. Basically the project was final target is to ensure the food security to the Marginalized, Conflict affected, Women headed HHs, Dalit and all vulnerable community in Western Nepal. The project was implemented in Nepal's six district; Surkhet, Banke, Kailali, Doti, Rupandehi and Nawalparasi. Specific objectives of the Projects are: 1. Increase income & employment opportunities 2. Improved access to infrastructures & other basic services 3. Empowerment of women, Dalits & minorities 4. Strengthened capacity of local institutions including government agencies 5. Policy influence at local, national & international levels The major activities of the project were as follows : 1. Leasehold farming 2. Semi commercial Farming 3. Off-farm skill Development trainings and Supports 4. Capacity building activities 5. Coordination and collaboration 6. Irrigation Support 7. On farm base activities The project 1st objective is to increase the Incomes and employment opportunities of Marginal, Dalit and vulnerable communities. DWO Surkhet has provided different types of the trainings and agricultural based activities like leasehold farming Improved self employment situation in the vulnerable communities. Landless people of the district has been able to learn the importance of Leasehold farming. Dalits, minority groups and oppressed group have purchased land and some are taking on mortgage . Most of the farmers are able to provide quality education to their own Children. Food security of poor people is improved. Some Beneficiaries have purchased the land, cycle, radio, mobile, ornaments, buffaloes, cow, goat, pig. Made the house, toilet and drinking water pump and Irrigation motor. Improved the health and sanitation at community level. Regular attendance of children increased in school. Being Reduced search of employment to India. The project 2nd expectation is Access to infrastructure services for food production, marketing and access to basic services improved. Push-cart, Rickshaw are supported by this project in Surkhet. it has helped to increase the access of Market, Health and education of vulnerable communities. The project 3rd expected result is Beneficiary groups, particularly women and minorities, empowered to organize collectively for social, economic and institutional development. Groups purchased shares from other Cooperatives. Members' feelings increase self and social respect. Participatory community plans were developed and implemented by the farmers groups. Strengthened the Capacity of Agriculture base Local Resource Persons. Having Technical, Management, leadership and Marketing related skills of farmers, women, Dalits and ethnic groups. Regularly collecting savings and mobilizing it as a credit among the Group members. Groups are motivated in Caste & Gender inclusion socially. LRPs District level coordination committee formed. Involved in different Management committee (School, temple, Community forest user group, Drinking water and irrigation user group) Dalit, woman, minorities self help groups are formed and strengthened. Confidence of capacity in speaking in meeting about their rights. Socially excluded men and women have an access to decision making level. Access to government resources. Registered in Governments and cooperatives. Some ILISSCON Promoted farmers awarded. Socio-economic status has been increased.
