About Project

The Food Security and Good Governance project is using a variety of methods to address issues of food insecurity for small farmers, Dalits, women, and other marginalized groups. The project began in October 2013 and will continue until September 2018 with financial assistance from the European Union and Denmark Aid. Working with small farmers in 5 VDCs in the Achham district, the project has focused on improving their knowledge of nutrition, increasing their involvement in decision making about growing practices, and offering financial and business management training. This has involved regular meetings with farmers unions, VDC level trainings for informing small farmers, and a 2-day summit with farmers who were identified as leaders in their communities. Information has been collected and recorded in the forms of food insecurity rates and traditional agricultural knowledge and practices. Not only was data collection conducted at the municipal and VDC level but a 3-day training on social audits, collection of statistics, and documentation of incidents was also conducted for continuation of these practices by local stakeholders. Additionally, continuing DWO’s history of advocacy, campaigns have been run to educate and inform the public on food insecurity issues, to promote traditional agricultural practices, and to use media to put pressure on the government to be attentive to food insecurity in the district. The area of advocacy is a particular focus for the future of the project.
